Einführung: Introduction
to Cultural Studies (I)
Do 15:00 - 17:00, G54-118
|
For quite some time now "Cultural Studies"
has been an intriguing area of academic activity and is recognized
as an important field of study in English departments and elsewhere.
This course is intended to introduce students in the B.A. program
to key concepts in cultural studies and familiarize them with the
social and theoretical histories and contexts of the field. Study
material will be made available by the beginning of term.
For a “Studiennachweis” and to
complete the module, students have to pass a final written test
comprising the three mandatory introductory courses, and attend
one of the tutorials regularly. Prospective participants must be
prepared to participate actively and to commit themselves to weekly
reading and writing assignments. To register for this class, please

B.A. Studiengang | Modul 8: Spezialisierung
Kulturstudien
Natural Science as Narrative: Rachel
Carson and the Tradition of Science Writing
Di
13:00 - 15:00, G54-119 |
Fifty years ago, in 1962, marine biologist
Rachel Carson published her book Silent Spring, an account
which describes in detail how the use of pesticides led to a significant
decimation of birdlife across the United States. Carson also alerted
her audience to the fact that the chemicals that humans released
into the environment ultimately found their way into human bodies.
The book created a tremendous public response, both from supporters
and from opponents and became a milestone in the history of the
American environmental movement. This class will take an intensive
look at Carson's book, analyze its characteristic features and discuss
the ways in which Silent Spring, with its thorough research
and its elegant writing, has challenged dominant notions of technological
progress. Secondary reading material will supplement the study of
the book and will contribute to an understanding of the overall
impact it has had on American culture.
Prospective participants are expected to have
purchased and read a copy of the book by the beginning of term.
They are also strongly encouraged to familiarize themselves in advance
with the general aspects of this subject. They must be prepared
to participate actively in class and to commit themselves to weekly
reading and writing assignments.

M.A. Studiengang | Modul 4: Identity and
Difference American Bodies
Do
13:00 - 15:00, G54-113 |
This
course will explore the history of the body in American culture with
regard to the aspects of gender, age, and race. In this context, attention
will be paid to the cultural representations of the body and their
impact. In particular, the individual sessions will examine how the
human body is exposed to and influenced by factors such as technology,
fashion, medicine, economic pressures, and the environment. The goal
is to develop a better understanding of how ideologies and cultural
practices affect the body and in what way the resulting effects shed
light on political and cultural history and the experiences and the
lives of Americans.
Prospective
participants are strongly encouraged to familiarize themselves in
advance with the general aspects of this subject. They must be prepared
to participate actively in class and to commit themselves to weekly
reading and writing assignments.
Reading
material will be made available by the beginning of term.

M.A. Studiengang | Modul 9: Methoden-
und Projektmodul
Planning and Organizing Academic
Projects
Di
11:00 - 13:00, G54-115
|
This course will review some of the most important
concepts of academic work. It will offer opportunities for participants
to check and improve their research and critical thinking skills.
In this manner, it will allow students to prepare themselves for
the final phase of their M.A. program by developing ideas for independent
research, in-depth analysis and articulation in the context of their
study environment. Participants will also gain valuable experience
articulating ideas about their projects through poster or other
visual display presentations involving both verbal and graphic forms
of explanation. To make the individual sessions as productive as
possible, prospective participants are strongly encouraged to begin
collecting and developing ideas about their final M.A. project before
the first meeting in October.
The requirements for this class include active
participation, the regular preparation of reading and writing assignments
plus research and reading outside of the course material. Specific
reading material will be made available by the beginning of term.
To register for this class, please go to http://www.ovgu.de/hkersten
