Studiengang | Modul 3: Culture, Community, and Place
Concepts of Nature: Contexts and Consequences
Di, 13:00 - 15:00, G40B-236 |
Although
the word "nature" is frequently used in everyday language,
it is not always clear what exactly it refers to. In fact, British
cultural critic Raymond Williams called "nature" the "most
complex word in the [English] language." Williams and others
have argued that ideas of nature are always embedded in a cultural
context and it is this context which determines the meanings and
the importance people assign to nature. By drawing on a variety
of materials, including fictional and non-fictional text as well
as examples from the arts and popular culture, this course will
explore and discuss different conceptions of nature in their specific
cultural contexts. Most of the source material will be taken from
American history and culture, although intercultural perspectives
will be addressed whenever it is appropriate. Due to its current
relevance the controversy over climate change will receive special
attention in this class.
Prospective
participants must be prepared to participate actively in class discussions
and to commit themselves to weekly reading and writing assignments.
To register for this class, please go to http://www.ovgu.de/hkersten
